1815-1852 Realism Russian Russian painter and draughtsman. He was noted for his satirical critique of Russian life of the mid-19th century. He attended the First Moscow Military School (1826-33), then served in St Petersburg in the Finnish Regiment Life-Guards. While earning a reputation as an honest and hard-working officer, he drew a great deal, played the flute and took part in amateur theatrical performances. Having become established as the regimental artist, in 1834 he began to attend evening classes at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts. In November 1843, after a long period of doubt, he resigned his commission in the army in order to become a professional artist. English Engraver, 1803-1874 English painter and printmaker. He was apprenticed on 4 February 1817 to George Cooke. His early training in engraving influenced his future career; his ability to draw a fine line, lay aquatint washes and hand-colour prints was an important factor in the creation of his particularly lucid style of watercolour landscapes and townscapes. At this time Cooke was engraving volumes of picturesque views by Turner and James Hakewell (1778-1843) as well as his own view of the Thames (1822);
Julian Scott
American, 1846-1901 ,was born in Johnson, Vermont and was a Union Army drummer during the American Civil War who received America highest military decoration the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Lee Mills, he was also an American painter and a Civil War artist. Scott received his youthful education at the Lamoille Academy, known today as Johnson State College where the main gallery is named in his memory. Scott continued his studies graduating from the National Academy of Design in New York and subsequently studied under Emmanuel Leutze until 1868. During the Civil War, Scott enlisted in the 3rd Vermont Infantry on June 1, 1861, at the age of 15 as a fifer and in February 1865, was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing wounded under enemy fire during the Battle at Lee Mills, Virginia. When the war was over he traveled to Paris and Stuttgart to continue his education. Scott 1872 masterwork, the Battle of Cedar Creek, is located at the Vermont State House. The painting illustrates the contributions of his home state of Vermont in the American Civil War In 1890, and is significant for its absence of glorification of war and instead shows the suffering and human sacrifice associated with war making. Scott traveled west as part of a census party, painting Native Americans in New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma. Many of his works from this expedition now hang in the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Art. Scott was interred in Hillside Cemetery located in Scotch Plains, New Jersey
Frederick Sandys
English Pre-Raphaelite Painter, ca.1829-1904 English painter, illustrator and draughtsman. He was the son of Anthony Sands (1804-83), a minor local artist. He began his artistic education with his father and attended the Norwich School of Design from 1846. His precocious talent was recognized by the award of silver medals by the Society of Arts in 1846 and 1847. He moved to London in 1851, when he first exhibited at the Royal Academy, but he continued to spend time at Norwich until the death of his parents in 1883. After publishing in 1857 A Nightmare, a gentle caricature of John Ruskin and his Pre-Raphaelite proteg's William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti and based on Millais's Sir Isumbras at the Ford
